The brief
Le secteur 52, au sud de Chandigarh, se situe à la limite entre la ville planifiée par Le Corbusier et les villes nouvelles qui se sont développées autour d’elle à mesure que la population et la popularité de la ville augmentent. Le secteur lui-même compte cinq typologies principales, d’un village préexistant à des logements MIG (classe moyenne) et des logements d’urgence, et sa position — entre Chandigarh et Mohali, à proximité de l’autoroute et de la nouvelle gare centrale — en fait un lieu de flux intense et, compte tenu de son manque d’organisation, un terrain idéal pour réinterpréter le plan urbain existant au profit d’une population plus dense.
Sector 52, in the south of Chandigarh, sits on the limit between Le Corbusier’s planned city and the new towns that have grown up around it as the city’s population and popularity increase. The sector itself holds five main typologies, from a pre-existing village to MIG (middle-income-group) housing and emergency housing, and its position — between Chandigarh and Mohali, close to the highway and the new main station — makes it a place of heavy flux and, given its lack of organisation, an ideal ground for reinterpreting the existing urban plan for a denser population.

Design issues
- Un nouveau type urbain construit à partir des enseignements des urbanistes d’origine de la ville (Drew, Fry et Jeanneret), notamment la ville verte et l’organisation en unités de village
- Des éléments d’architecture vernaculaire locale et des innovations écologiques, dont le chandni et le moucharabieh, adaptés au climat et au mode de vie locaux
- Une maison individuelle à haute densité fondée sur une unité de village réinterprétée, qui intègre la nature à l’intérieur même du logement plutôt qu’à l’extérieur
- Un plan urbain phasé pour absorber la croissance démographique sans surdimensionner les infrastructures, permettant au projet de relier entre elles les « îlots » déconnectés qui l’entourent
- A new urban type built on lessons from the city’s original planners (Drew, Fry and Jeanneret), notably the green city and the village-unit organisation
- Elements of local vernacular architecture and ecological innovations, including the chandni and moucharabieh, adapted to the local climate and way of life
- A high-density single home based on a reinterpreted village unit that brings nature inside as part of the home rather than outside it
- An urban plan phased to absorb population growth without overbuilding infrastructure, so the project can knit together the unconnected “islands” around it
